Security cameras for your home in Het Gooi
What a camera needs to do to be useful at night, why your footage should stay in your own house, and what the Dutch rules say about filming.
A camera is only useful if it answers the question you actually have. A face at the door, a number plate at the gate, or an overview of the garden are three different cameras. We decide that first, then choose the equipment, and the footage is stored on a recorder in your own home rather than in a manufacturer’s cloud.
Start with what you want to see
Almost every disappointing camera system we are asked to fix has the same cause: someone ordered four cameras without deciding what those cameras needed to capture. The result is footage that shows something happened but not who did it.
- Recognising a face needs a camera close to a doorway or gate, at head height, with light on the face rather than behind it.
- Reading a number plate needs a dedicated camera with a short shutter speed, angled to the driveway. A general overview camera will not do this after dark.
- Overview of a garden needs height and a wide lens, and will not give you a usable face.
- Knowing someone is there is detection rather than recording, and on a large plot it is often the most valuable part.
What modern cameras can tell apart
Older systems alert on movement, which in a garden in Het Gooi means alerts all night from cats, foxes and branches. Current equipment identifies what it sees first: a person, an animal, a bicycle or a vehicle. You can be alerted to a person on the back path and not to the cat on the terrace, which is the difference between a system you keep switched on and one you disable after a fortnight.
Storage, subscriptions and your footage
We put the recorder in your own meter cupboard or a locked cabinet. Your footage stays yours, you do not pay a monthly fee to access it, and the Dutch data protection authority considers local storage the safer option. If you want remote viewing on your phone, that works without a subscription too.
Retention is set to what you need. Four weeks is common for a home, so that you can still look back after a holiday.
Older and listed properties
Many houses here are listed, in a protected village conservation area, or have thatched roofs. Drilling into natural stone or through thatch is not acceptable, and often not permitted. We run cabling through mortar joints, existing ducts or along the roof edge, and match the housing colour to the render or trim. Where the local authority needs to be consulted, we do that before anything is drilled.
Frequently asked questions
Can I view the cameras from abroad?
Yes. The app works anywhere with an internet connection, which matters if you travel or spend part of the year elsewhere. This does not require a paid subscription.
Will the cameras work in the dark?
They will, but not all in the same way. Some produce black and white infrared images, others keep colour using a small amount of additional light. Which is appropriate depends on your garden and on what you want to recognise. We show you real night footage before you decide.
My insurer asked for a certified installation. Can you provide that?
Tell us what your policy requires and we will tell you honestly whether we can meet it and what it involves. Requirements differ per insurer, so we prefer to read the actual wording rather than guess.
Can cameras and an alarm work together?
Yes, and on a large property this is what you want. The camera confirms that a person is present rather than an animal, and only then does the alarm respond. You receive an alert with an image attached.
